The Nutcracker: Remixed
December 13, 2014
Lake Norman High School Theater
Two hundred plus students presented The Nutcracker: Remixed on
stage December 13. The middle school
students at Community School of Davidson had taken remixes of Tchaikovsky's
original score for The Nutcracker
ballet, such as hip hop, piano, big band versions of the songs, etc with a few
fun ones thrown in as well and learned choreography to this fresh presentation of
The Nutcracker: Remixed.
Sara Keys, the CSD dance teacher says
“In addition to our normal class rehearsal time -about 20 hours per week for
three months- by the time we reach the show we will have rehearsed over an
extra 100 hours outside of school for character roles.” Over 130 of the 7th/8th
graders who desired extra dance experience outside of school received roles.
The 1 ½ hour performance was suitable
for children and families of all ages.
Lake Norman High School had once again graciously allowing CSD to utilize
their performance space. The previous
three years Keys has brought to life the Hunger
Games trilogy through dance. This
year at the encouraging of students, she is breathing new life into The Nutcracker.

Legally Blonde the Musical

Dear Edwina Jr.
DEAR EDWINA JR. follows the adventures of plucky advice-giver extraordinaire Edwina Spoonapple as she directs the neighborhood kids in a series of buoyant production numbers as part of the latest edition of her weekly "Advice-A-Palooza" extravaganza. Written in the episodic style of SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, DEAR EDWINA JR. is the perfect musical for a new generation.
13-year old Edwina Spoonapple has very talented siblings. But because of this, she thinks that she isn't special or talented. Yet Edwina has many talents including leadership, singing and advising, and she combines all of them by directing musicals out of her garage. The topic of these musicals is letters written to her by neighborhood kids who need advice. She gives them advice through songs and dances that she orchestrates with her friends. One of the main themes of Dear Edwina is Edwina's desire to be in the "Advice-a-palooza" festival because she feels it will prove that she is as talented as her siblings. This is all going on while Edwina's love interest, Scott, is trying to win her over. But, since Edwina is so concerned about her show, she doesn't care about Scott. Scott wins her heart by singing her a song as an impromptu performance on the show. The talent scout calls, and asks for Scott to perform at the festival, not Edwina. She is heartbroken when she runs into Katie Spoonapple, who has just run away from the Summer Math Olympics because she was getting made fun of by the other girls. She tells Katie not to listen to those kids, and to do what you love to do. Katie hugs her, and Edwina realizes that love is far more important than getting a prize.
Les Miserables, School Edition
February 20-23, 2014
Community School of Davidson was pleased to present Les Miserables, School Edition. Directed by Melissa Ohlman-Roberge, music direction by John Smith and costume design by Chris Lundsten. The project was developed as a modified concert version and was performed in the round with multiple performance areas set throughout the theatre.
"This legendary musical has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young performers. This author-approved edition has been abridged to a running time of just over two hours, while carefully maintaining the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written. This epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes and honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father - violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed."
Auditions were held on December 2-3, 2013 at the CSD.
