2021-22 School Year Lottery FAQ

The Lottery for the 2021-22 school year is open to the public and is scheduled to occur during one of our board meetings on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at 4:00 pm, at our High School campus in the Black Box Theater, located at 404 Armour Street, Davidson 28036.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

When will registration be available?
October 1, 2020 through January 31, 2021

What is the registration deadline?
All registration forms must be received in-house or postmarked by January 31, 2021.  Any registration form received after January 31, 2021 will NOT be entered in the lottery but will be added, in the order received, to the end of the appropriate grade level wait list generated by the lottery.

How old does my child need to be to register for Kindergarten?
A child must be five years old on or before August 31, 2021 to enroll as a Kindergarten student.  If you have questions about Early Kindergarten Enrollment, please contact the Student Registrar at Lottery@csdspartans.org.

How do I Register my child(ren) for the Lottery?

You can submit a registration form online (preferred) by clicking on the Enrolling page of our website. There is also a paper copy available if preferred. Paper copies of the Enrollment Application Form for the 2021-22 School Year, may be picked up at either our High School or K-7 Campus.

How do I know if my registration form has been received?
You should receive an email confirmation containing your Registration Number shortly after submission. PLEASE PRINT OUT THIS CONFIRMATION EMAIL AND KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.  If you do not receive your Registration Number by email confirmation or by mail, after you submit your registration form(s), then your registration did not go through and your child will not be run through the lottery. YOU are responsible for ensuring you receive a Registration Number. Please contact us via email to confirm receipt of registration if you are in doubt.  On a few occasions, registrants have found their email confirmation in their SPAM folder because our confirmation emails contain the word "lottery", so be sure to check there before you email us at Lottery@csdspartans.org for assistance.

If I mail or fax in a paper registration form, what happens?
We will manually enter your registration information for you into our lottery database and assign it a Registration Number.  You will be notified of this number by email or mail. PLEASE RECORD THIS REGISTRATION NUMBER AND KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE.

What if I have forgotten my number?

The first thing we ask is that you check your email.  With the exception of a very few – all confirmations were sent via email when you registered your child.  If you still are unsuccessful – you may email the Student Registrar at Lottery@csdspartans.org for assistance.  We respectfully ask that you email rather than call the school.

I have multiple birth siblings (twins, triplets, etc.), how does that work?
If multiple birth siblings apply for admission to a charter school and a lottery is needed under G.S. 115C-238.29F(g)(6), the charter school shall enter one surname into the lottery to represent all of the multiple birth siblings. If that surname of the multiple birth siblings is selected on the day of the lottery, then all of the multiple birth siblings shall be admitted.  To learn more, please click here.

Do I have to be a resident of North Carolina in order to register for the lottery?
Yes.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Division of Charter Schools, mandates that applications from out-of-state residents are not eligible for admission unless proof of North Carolina residency can be provided by the registration deadline of January 31.

Do I have to attend or view online an Open House presentation?
We strongly suggest you attend or view an Open House presentation so that you are prepared to accept or decline the slot, if offered at any point, especially if a slot is offered to you in August, when you will have a short window to make a decision.  Our school philosophy is amazing and unique, but is not for everyone. Should you be admitted to CSD on the day of the lottery or throughout the Spring, and have not had the opportunity to attend or view an Open House presentation, we will be contacting you to attend an information session.  We feel it’s important for all our new families to have an opportunity to hear about CSD to decide if our school’s philosophy and values align with that of your family.

How many spots will you be filling for this lottery?
Open space is determined by the number of current students planning to return. Any openings will first be filled from our Staff/Sibling Priority wait list and then from the General Lottery wait list.
Please note that we anticipate having openings for admission into Kindergarten on Lottery Night, and there may be openings in other grade levels (1st-12th). A wait list will be generated for any grade levels which are at capacity.  We do, however, typically have openings become available during the late Spring and Summer due to student withdrawal or retention.

How are siblings of currently enrolled students processed through enrollment?
Siblings of currently enrolled students will need to submit a new Sibling Registration Form each year until they are admitted.  We will send current CSD families a separate sibling registration link to use to submit registrations. Siblings of students currently attending CSD are given priority for placement as spaces for the applicable grade level become available. Sibling priority wait lists vary in number each year but can be quite large in some grade levels.  While we are hopeful to place these siblings within a year, it is possible that it could take longer.

I cannot attend the lottery, how can I find out if my child has been admitted?

On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, you can check your child’s lottery position on our website.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of registration forms received, LOTTERY RESULTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN OVER THE PHONE OR VIA EMAIL.  Please check the website link to find your results.  Those admitted on the night of the lottery will be notified by email within a few days and will find their admission paperwork attached to that email.  All required paperwork needs to be completed and returned in its entirety to the CSD Student Registrar in order to secure your child's slot in the time frame referenced in the admission email.
We will notify any additional admissions after the night of the lottery by phone and then will follow up with the "admission" email, so please ensure you use valid phone numbers and email addresses on your registration form(s).
You can also check your child's lottery position starting on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, by coming to either campus and inquiring at the front desk, anytime during regular school hours.

My child is currently on the wait list; does the wait list expire once the new lottery is run or does it carry over?
Wait lists do not carry over from year to year.  Each year's wait list expires on January 15. If your child does not get in by January 15, a new registration form must be submitted for the next school year's lottery. You are welcome to register online or pick up a registration form anytime between October 1 and January 31 each year, anytime during regular school hours.

CSD Board Policy Regarding Lottery Process:
CSD Registration and Lottery Procedures

Community School of Davidson will not discriminate against any student on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, gender, or disability. Except as required by law, the school will not limit admission to students on the basis of intellectual ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, athletic ability, disability, race, creed, gender, national origin, religion, or ancestry.

For example:

The Smith family has 4 children eligible for CSD’s lottery. (Mike will be in 12th grade, Susan will be in 4th grade, Sammy will be in 3rd grade and Maddie will be in Kindergarten.) They would like to run all under one unique registration number. The Smith family will need to decide which child and grade level will be entered into the lottery as the “named” registrant.

The Smith family has chosen to run Maddie through the Kindergarten lottery.

They will fill out the Registration form with Maddie’s information, and include all other siblings to be considered for admission in the space provided.

On Lottery night, if Maddie is admitted, then the rest of her siblings will also be admitted if there is space available in their respective grade levels. If there is no space, then those siblings will be added to the sibling priority waitlist and be eligible for admission throughout the school year as space becomes available.
