Summer Programs & Opportunities


NC Sponsored Summer Programs:
Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics
SVSM is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically high achieving students who have demonstrated interest in career fields related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). This program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study.

NC Governor's School: 
The Governor's School of North Carolina is a five and one-half week summer residential program for intellectually gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests, or grades.

Appalachian State University—Martha Guy Summer Institute

Three week program for students interested in learning about business and. developing their professional/leadership skills—includes a trip to Washington, DC and New York City


Anytown Summer Leadership Program

A five day residential leadership program that brings together a diverse group of high school students from the Charlotte region to discuss diversity issues, inclusion, discrimination, and leadership


Bank of America Student Leaders Program

For current juniors and seniors—includes a paid internship at a nonprofit/charitable organization

and a week-long Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC

Blyth Education

This organization is the largest provider of international community service and accredited summer

programs in Canada. There are multiple programs offered in a variety of countries. High school

academic credits are offered.


Boston University Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists

Six week program for ambitious students to study math


Boston University High School Honors Program

For rising seniors—includes college level coursework or scientific research


Brown University Summer Leadership Institute

Courses designed for outstanding high school students who desire to challenge themselves

intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally


Broyhill Leadership Conference

For rising 10th-12th graders—a five day/four night leadership and personal development conference

held on the campus of Queens University


Carnegie Mellon University Pre-College Program

Includes programs in architecture, art, design, drama, music or National High School Game Academy


Carolina School of Broadcasting

Week-long program to learn about radio and TV broadcasting


Catalyst Academy at Cornell University

One-week residential program for underrepresented high school students who excel in math and

science, enjoy solving programs, and want to learn more about career in engineering


CDC Disease Detective Camp

Offered through the National Center for Health Marketing's Global Health Odyssey Museum—an

academic day camp for rising high school juniors and seniors—participants will take on the roles of

disease detectives and learn how CDC safeguards the nation's health

A one-week, hands on program for high school students who are interested in a career in law

Clemson University Summer Science, Engineering and Architecture Enrichment Program

For rising 7th-12th graders—includes educational, recreational, and cultural activities. Classes

offered in architecture, life sciences, earth/physical sciences, mathematics, engineering,

communications, computer science, and social sciences


Clemson University SAT Summer Showdown

A residential summer camp for rising 10th-12th graders that includes 18 hours of classroom

instruction, 3 full-length practice tests with individualized score reports, college admissions

counseling, and campus tours


Close Up's Student Summer Academy

A six-day program that gives students an in-depth look at our government by using Washington, DC,

as a living classroom while living and learning with peers from schools nationwide


College of William & Mary Early American History Pre-College Program

For rising juniors & seniors and spring 2010 graduates—take classes conducted on-site at various

historical places around the region


Columbia University’s Summer Program for High School Students in New York City

Offers pre-college enrichment programs for students entering grades 9-12—

A special feature of the 2010 program is a series of new courses in the arts developed in

conjunction with Columbia’s School of the Arts


Converse College

Co-educational, residential summer workshops—programs include forensic science, writing, visual

arts, and theatre


Cornell University Summer College

One to six week-long programs that include college level coursework


Davidson College July Experience

For rising juniors and seniors—a three-week pre-college academic enrichment program

Exeter Summer School

Five week program for academic study and athletics at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire


Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge

Five day residential program at Wingate University—students learn about free market economics

and create businesses & marketing plans


Furman University Summer Scholars

One- or two-week program where students actively participate in classes and experience college life


General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge Institute

For rising 9th-12th graders—a week long leadership program offered at UNC-Charlotte and NC

State University


George Washington University Science & Engineering Apprenticeship Program

An eight week program for academically talented high school students (at least 16 yrs old,

sophomores/juniors) with interest in science & math—students participate in a paid apprenticeship

($2,000) at the Department of Defense laboratories


Georgetown University

Programs include American Politics & Public Affairs, College Preparatory Program, Computer

Science, Environmental Science, Fundamentals of Business: Leadership in a Global Economy,

International Relations, Journalism Workshop, National Security and Counterintelligence


Global Citizen Awards

Essay Contest—Winners will travel together on a 10-day expenses-paid educational tour of Europe


Harvard University’s Secondary School program

Students who have completed 10th, 11th, or 12th grades—participants will take college classes and live

in the dorms


Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders

A week-long program at NC State Univ. and A&T State Univ. for rising seniors who are interested in

the agricultural industry—participants will visit the schools of agriculture, tour research farms and

university laboratories, visit agribusiness and participate in leadership development classes


Johnson & Whales University Career Explorations

For rising juniors and seniors—programs for students to explore careers in business, culinary arts,

hospitality, or technology


Junior Statesman Summer School

A challenging academic program for students who have a passion for government and politics—

program locations include Yale, Georgetown, Princeton and Stanford


Lott Leadership Institute at the University of Mississippi

A virtually cost-free (all accepted students receive scholarships) program for rising seniors to

develop leadership skills and prepare students for college—the last week includes a trip to

Washington, DC.


MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) program

A challenging 6 week summer program that prepares promising rising seniors for careers in

engineering and science—if selected, all educational, housing, meals and activity costs are covered

(transportation to and from MIT is not covered)


Morehouse College Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program

For male students completing their sophomore or junior year of high school or male students who

have completed their senior year of high school and have applied to Morehouse for Fall 2009—

focuses on personal and interpersonal leadership skills


Morehouse College Summer Institute (Project Identity)

Rising 10th & 11th grade African-American males—a four week program that includes an intense

curriculum and enrichment activities to assist in developing academic, social and leadership skills


Motorsports Institute Summer Camp

A week-long, hands-on camp for rising juniors and seniors—participants learn about motorsports

through some of the most high-tech facilities in the field

NASA National Space Club Scholars Program

A 6-week summer internship at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center—for students who will be 16

years old and have completed the 10th grade by June 2009, have demonstrated high academic

success, and have an interest in space science or engineering as a career


National Youth Science Camp

A cost-free program held in West Virginia that includes educational and recreational activities for

students interested in science—two students are selected to represent each state


North Carolina Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy

A week-long program that focuses on airplanes and flying, the theory of flight and aviation history,

and aviation careers


NC Project SEED

A cost-free, statewide, year-round science enrichment program for academically talented

students—includes a paid internship in the chemistry field


NC State University Pre-College Program

Programs available in a variety of disciplines—help students prepare for college while experiencing

NC State life


NC State Engineering Summer Program

A week-long residential program through which students can experience engineering, college life,

and NC State University


Outward Bound USA

One of the leading providers of adventure-based education programs—over $2 million in

scholarships is available to students who are interested in attending a program


Penn State Summer Study

For students completing 10th, 11th, and 12th grades—programs are at Penn State, University of

Colorado at Boulder, University of Vermont and The Sorbonne in Paris. Sessions range from 2-6

weeks and offer college courses, PSAT/ACT prep, weekend trips, and/or community service


Pratt University Summer Pre-College Program

Month-long program in New York City that includes classes in art, design, architecture, creative

writing, or critical/visual studies


Presbyterian Healthcare Junior Volunteer Program

Opportunity for teens to learn about healthcare by assisting staff, visitors, and patients with nonmedical

tasks—participants must be 14 years or older by June 1, 2010


Princeton University Summer Journalism Program

For low-income sophomores or juniors with at least a 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) who have an interest

in journalism—cost is free, including travel costs to and from Princeton


Putney Student Travel

Offers six categories for programs—Community Service, Global Awareness in Action, Language

Learning, Cultural Exploration, and Excel pre-college Enrichment


Salem Academy and College

Two week academic program for rising 7th-12th grade girls


Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics

For rising juniors and seniors—a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented North

Carolina residents who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics


Technological Advances in Reproductive Biology Summer Science Enrichment Program

Held on campus of Wingate University—students will study the science behind reproductive

technologies by looking at basic reproductive physiology and the technological applications from a

comparative standpoint between humans and animals. Check Wingate’s website for current application.


The Shelton Challenge at NCSU/UNCC

A six day residential experience (offered at both NCSU and UNCC) to help students expand their

knowledge and skills of what it takes to be a leader—activities include team building activities, low

and high ropes courses, service projects, and fun night activities


U.S. Military Academy (West Point) Summer Leadership Seminar

For rising seniors—a week-long program that includes academic classes, military training, physical

fitness training and intramural athletics to give participants the opportunity to experience cadet



UNC-Charlotte SAT Preparation program

Lower cost than many other SAT preparation programs—week-long sessions are offered from

February to October 2009 (including four sessions in July)


UNC-Charlotte Aspire! Program

Week-long program for rising 11th and 12th graders—participants select an academic “strand” in

health, engineering technology, drama, networking, journalism or nanoscience


University of Alabama Capstone Business Leadership Academy

For rising seniors—a ten day summer program for students interested in pursuing a career in



University of Maryland—College Park Women in Engineering program (E2@UMD)

A one-week summer program for high school women (rising juniors or seniors) who are considering

engineering as a possible major and career


University of Maryland Young Scholars Program

For rising juniors and seniors who have a strong academic record and a desire to excel and to

experience college life


University of Virginia Student Summer Academy

Six-day program that gives students get an inside view of the people, processes and places of the

nation’s capitol while earning credit from UVA


Washington Internship Experience

For students with an interest in government and politics—includes a 3-6 week internship in
